loaiáza

A parasitic infection caused by the nematode Loa loa. The vector in the transmission of this infection is the horsefly (Tabanus) or the deerfly or mango fly (Chrysops). The larvae may be seen just beneath the skin or passing through the conjunctiva. Eye lesions are not uncommon. The disease is generally mild and painless.

syndrom dlouhého QT

A condition that is characterized by episodes of fainting (SYNCOPE) and varying degree of ventricular arrhythmia as indicated by the prolonged QT interval. The inherited forms are caused by mutation of genes encoding cardiac ion channel proteins. The two major forms are ROMANO-WARD SYNDROME and JERVELL-LANGE NIELSEN SYNDROME.

This arrhythmia is associated with a prolongation of repolarization following depolarization of the cardiac ventricles. The prolongation of the Q-T interval combined with torsades de pointes manifests as several different forms; some may be acquired or congenital; some may lead to serious arrhythmia and sudden cardiac death. loperamid

One of the long-acting synthetic ANTIDIARRHEALS; it is not significantly absorbed from the gut, and has no effect on the adrenergic system or central nervous system, but may antagonize histamine and interfere with acetylcholine release locally.
MSH

A synthetic agent chemically related to the opiates with anti-diarrheal properties. Loperamide decreases gastro-intestinal motility by effects on the circular and longitudinal muscles of the intestine. Part of its anti-diarrheal effect may be due to a reduction of gastro-intestinal secretion produced by opioid receptor binding in the intestinal mucosa. (NCI04)

MSH

7-chloro-5-(2-chlorophenyl)-1, 3-dihydro-3-hydroxy-1,4- benzodiazepin-2-one.
CSP

a drug used to treat anxiety
CHV

A drug that is used to treat anxiety and certain seizure disorders (such as epilepsy), and to prevent nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy. It belongs to the families of drugs called antiemetics and benzodiazepines.
NCI

A benzodiazepine with anxiolytic, anti-anxiety, anticonvulsant, anti-emetic and sedative properties. Lorazepam enhances the effect of the inhibitory neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid on the GABA receptors by binding to a site that is distinct from the GABA binding site in the central nervous system. This leads to an increase in chloride channel opening events, a facilitation of chloride ion conductance, membrane hyperpolarization, and eventually inhibition of the transmission of nerve signals, thereby decreasing nervous excitation. lovastatin

A fungal metabolite isolated from cultures of Aspergillus terreus. The compound is a potent anticholesteremic agent. It inhibits 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase (HYDROXYMETHYLGLUTARYL COA REDUCTASES), which is the rate-limiting enzyme in cholesterol biosynthesis. It also stimulates the production of low-density lipoprotein receptors in the liver.
MSH

HMG coA reductase inhibitor which inhibits cholesterol biosynthesis and thus lowers blood cholesterol levels; also blocks isoprenylation of protein CAAX motifs.
CSP

A drug used to lower the amount of cholesterol in the blood. It is also being studied in the prevention and treatment of some types of cancer. Lovastatin is a type of HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor (statin).
NCI

A lactone metabolite isolated from the fungus Aspergillus terreus with cholesterol-lowering activity and potential antineoplastic activity. Lovastatin is hydrolyszed to the active beta-hydroxyacid form, which competitively inhibits 3-hydroxyl-3-methylgutarylcoenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase, an enzyme involved in the cholesterol biosynthesis. In addition, this agent may inhibit tumor cell proliferation and reduce tumor cell invasiveness, thereby decreasing tumor metastatic potential; induce tumor cell apoptosis, possibly by inhibiting protein geranylgeranylation and; arrest cells in the G1 phase of the cell cycle, an effect that sensitizes tumor cells to the cytotoxic effects of ionizing radiation.
